A rhetorical essay is essentially a form of academic essay given at most courses and literature classes. But in this case, a rhetorical analysis isn't your normal essay; rather, it examines how the writer uses words, the chosen method of delivery, and the chosen meaning behind a specific piece of literary work. This can be highly challenging, as the entire point of literary analysis is to reveal all of the literary influences upon the author's work through a means of analysis. That being said, once you've mastered the techniques of analysis, it opens up a wealth of possibilities because you can then use this knowledge to further understand the words and the authors. And that's why it's so difficult.
There are two major techniques used in this style of analysis essay, which I will highlight. The first is known as "thematic investigation." In this case, all of the writing is merely a manifestation of previous concepts and ideas - where previous themes can be explored in light of current events. All too often, people analyze a piece only to discover that the author has already addressed the same matter before in a different way. This is known as "praxis."
The second technique I'd like to talk about is called "thematic questioning." In rhetorical essay examples, the writer questions his or her own thesis statement in order to uncover its underlying textual and philosophical basis. As such, this is the second technique I'd like to talk about; though the first one I'll mention should be enough to give you a good idea of what to do and what not to do! The goal is to understand the target audience better, not merely to excel at writing research papers.
